A monitor arm is one of those workspace purchases where the quality gap between budget and premium options is dramatic, obvious, and immediately apparent. The cheap arms sag within six months. The joint friction loosens after a year. The cheap gas cylinders lose their resistance. The Amazon Basics monitor arm ($140–$175) compared to the Ergotron LX ($150–$200) offers effectively identical build quality, warranty support through Ergotron’s supply chain, and the same gas-spring mechanism. The difference is cosmetic: a slightly different arm aesthetic and the Amazon Basics branding.
The honest BIFL recommendation: if the price difference is meaningful to you, the Amazon Basics arm is a genuine equivalent. If it’s not, buy the branded Ergotron for the slightly better customer service experience and the ability to buy replacement parts under the Ergotron name.
Desk Grommet vs. Clamp: Making the Right Choice Once
This is a decision you make once, so make it right.
Desk clamp mounts attach to the edge of your desk via a clamp that grips the desktop edge or passes through a bolt below. They’re reversible, non-destructive, and work on virtually any desk. The downside: they require a desktop edge of appropriate thickness (most are designed for 0.4″–2.5″ thick surfaces) and they can slightly mar the edge of the desktop where the clamp contacts it over years of use.
Desk grommet mounts pass through a drilled hole in the desktop for a cleaner, more permanent installation. Most standing desks come with a pre-drilled grommet hole in the standard position. Grommet mounts are more stable (no leverage against the edge) and look cleaner, but they’re permanent.
For a standing desk you expect to keep for 10+ years: grommet mount. For a desk you’re less certain about, or a desk where drilling isn’t an option: clamp mount from Ergotron, which has among the best clamp designs in the category.
